The South London Route Utilisation Strategy (RUS) covers the complex suburban rail network in the south and south east of the capital and parts of Kent, Sussex and Surrey, where 66 per cent of all rail trips are commuter journeys. Passenger numbers are projected to increase by up to 25 per cent in the next 12 years.

In addition to ongoing informal consultation with a wide group of stakeholders throughout the process, a formal consultation took place between July and October 2007. The resulting strategy includes longer trains and platforms, and changes to services in connection with the East London Line Extension and the Thameslink Programme.
